obama is packing his bags, heading back to washington to try to forge a deal on the fiscal cliff, with just six days left to negotiate, a deal to avoid the catastrophic cliff, the president will leave hawaii tonight to try to work on a bargain between democrats and republicans. brianna keilar is traveling with the president in hawaii and joins us now. good morning, brianna. did the president cut his vacation short or was it planned all along? >> reporter: he did cut his vacation short from what was initially planned which was to go through the new year, so yes, he cut it short. i think we have a sense he might be heading back to d.c., carol, you'll recall when talks fell apart last week between house speaker john boehner and the president as the president departed for hawaii he talked to reporters in the briefing room and he said "see you next week" so i think we had a sense he would be coming back earlier than initially planned and it was just a matter of when, not if, and he'll be heading back tonight, that's local time so he'll be traveling overnight, it's quite a long flight,
mentioned, a law signed by obama a couple of weeks ago intended to penalize, sanction russian officials connected with this particular custody case and this tax evasion case in russia. >> so matthew, this law would go into effect january 1st. is there any chance that those cases that are pending where the paperwork is finalized and where people are expecting their children, essentially, in a month or two would be allowed to go through? >> well, there is a question mark hanging over those. there are 52 children, according to the kremlin, that are in the middle of this adoption process with u.s. parents. the law, as you say, starts on january the 1st, but it's only a couple of days until then. so unless that can be finalized, my expectation is that that will be put on hold and indeed that's what russian officials are saying, that they don't think this law has been enacted from january the 1st, these children should be allowed to go to the united states. instead there's been a call for russian families to step forward and take on those adoptions instead. >> all right, matthew, thank you ve
the national rifle association's opposition to any new gun laws, president obama insists an action is not an option when it comes to protecting children. while democrats and republicans are upset over the massacre in newtown, the country remains polarized on the issue of gun control. cnn's senior congressional correspondent dana bash is in washington. we know that some lawmakers came forward and expressed interest in introducing legislation about gun control, but i guess the question is will they really in the new year? >> reporter: it really -- the reaction, especially and even among republicans to the nra idea is sort of muted at best. it's not a lot of enthusiasm on capitol hill for the idea of the federal government stepping in and endorsing the idea of all schools having armed police officers. never mind funding it. listen to a couple of senators, starting with a republican. >> we had an armed guard in columbine. we had an assault ban. none of it worked. we're talking about preventing mass murder from nontraditional criminals. people who are not traditional criminals, who are

this is reported i thought was redundant, like saying president obama's speech in n newtown was a call to scripture and prayer. it wasn't what he was talking about but he referenced scripture and prayer. the first words out of his mouth, the lord is already near, come, let us adore him. it was a spiritual message. in the middle of the message he reflected on the traditional family which we know the church supports and has long supported. and defended. and he made glancing reference to our personal selfishness and said that's a threat to the family. people not wanting to make commitments. and therefore give of their time and their energy to have families in the first place. and then he made reference to this manipulation of nature. but he never mentioned gay marriage. he never mentioned gay people in there. so i think, you know, it is it was certainly one can interpret that was the focus of what he was talking about in that particular paragraph. but i think to characterize the whole message that way is reductive. he was calling all of us to task for various failings, in our personal lives, and i thi
obama have left washington for christmas, and with no consensus on the momentous tax hikes and spending cuts set to go into effect january 1st. cnn's brianna keilar is live in hawaii where the president is vacationing. br breanna, is the president overly optimistic a last-minute deal can be reached? >> reporter: i don't know, miguel, if you could say overly optimistic. we heard him last night in the briefing room of the white house saying he's a hopeless optimist that something can still be done. but the fact is it's going to be something smaller. he's now pushing for tax cuts to be preserved for americans making $250,000 or less and pushing for unemployment benefits to be extended for a couple million americans. listen to some of what he said but also still some of the house republican opposition to this short-term plan he's pushing. >> in the next few days i've asked leaders of congress to work towards a package that prevents a tax hike on middle-class americans, protects unemployment insurance for 2 million americans, and lays the groundwork for further work on both growth and defici
